The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics keeps track of illnesses and industries, and then groups them by sector. This shows which jobs in the United States are the most common for workers to report being made ill or getting injured on the job at.

You might be surprised by the top five jobs most likely to leave you sick or injured:

• State government-run nursing homes. These workers experienced 13.1 cases of injury or illness per 100 employees, with 7.4 cases per 100 employees requiring days away from work, a job transfer or restrictions.
• Local police or firefighters. On average, their employers reported 10.3 cases per 100 employees and 5.6 cases per 100 employees with days away from work, a job transfer or restrictions.
• National government-run nursing homes. —Workers here experienced 10.2 cases per 100 employees and 7.1 cases per 100 employees with days away from work, a job transfer or restrictions.
• Local hospitals. It’s not just the public sector folks. Local hospital employees experienced 9.2 cases per 100 employees and 4.8 cases per 100 employees with days away from work, a job transfer or restrictions.
• Heavy and civil engineers. They have built our cities — at a personal toll, with 8.9 cases per 100 employees and 4.8 cases per 100 employees with days away from work, a job transfer or restrictions.

Turns out that “Lift with your legs” is still some pretty relevant advice when it comes to workplace injuries. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics found that the most common injuries requiring days off are sprains, strains and tears from overexertion or lifting.

Its report also found that the safest jobs in the United States include data processing, information services, and financial funds or trust work.
