Radon Remediation Measures
Radon gas is a naturally occurring radioactive element that is present in rocks and soil all over the United States. While incidental exposure isn’t dangerous, long-term exposure can be harmful and can even cause lung cancer.
As radon breaks down, the particles of that breakdown can get lodged in the lining of the lungs. These particles give off radiation and can cause lung cancer. You can have tests done in your home to measure radon levels and reduce exposure, if needed. Radon is most common in basements and other low-lying areas of a home.
There are five basic features that can be included in newly constructed buildings to limit radon exposure within them:
- Gravel. Including a 4-inch layer of gravel below the foundation or slab of a house can allow gases to circulate and move around instead of accumulating.
- Plastic sheeting. Placing a simple layer of plastic sheeting above the gravel layer can help prevent gases from entering the house.
- Vent pipes. A vent pipe that runs from the gravel layer all the way through to the top of the house allows radon gas to escape freely, instead of accumulating.
- Sealing and caulking. Sealing all cracks, crevices and openings in the foundation floor prevents gases from entering the home.
- Junction boxes. If more aggressive measures are needed, a junction box in the attic with a vent fan should encourage gases to move through and out of the home.
No specialized equipment or expensive materials are required to carry out radon remediation. However, it’s much easier to take the steps above when you’re building a house, rather than adding them later.
