What is the Latency Period with Mesothelioma?
According to the U.S. National Library of Medicine, researchers conducted a study to determine what the latency period was for mesothelioma. They examined 421 cases of pleural (lung) mesothelioma in a region of Italy. Based on occupational information gathered from patients or their relatives and analysis of lung samples, they determined latency periods for 312 cases. They found that the latency period ranged from 14 to 72 years, and that the type of occupation also affected latency periods. Among different occupations, these were the latency periods:
- 29.6 years for insulators
- 35.4 for dock workers
- 46.4 for non-shipbuilding industry workers
- 49.4 for shipyard workers
- 51.7 for women with a domestic exposure history to asbestos
- 56.2 for maritime trade workers
While the intensity of exposure was a factor, it was not the only factor involved with the duration of latency periods.
